Does anyone have a drawing or spec sheet, or photocopy thereof, for Southern Pacific "economy" baggage cars, class 66-B-1, built 1960, S.P. numbers 6600-6699? or class 66-B-2, built 1962, S.P. numbers 6700-6799? Bonus points if the document was originally issued by the S.P.! Reason: We may have to move one of these cars by truck. Thanks! - Doug Debs |

Hi Doug, Check the California State Railroad Museum Library. They have some diagrams and other useful sheets. Sincerely, Dan Quiat |

Who was the builder? If Pullman-Standard, the Pullman Library at IRM likely has the specifications. |

The specifications for these cars are listed among the documents in the SP manuscript collection at the Stanford University Library Special Collections. The list of what is at Stanford's Special Collections can be found using Online Archive of California. This collection like most of the materials in the Special Collections are stored off site and require at least a two-day advance request for the specific storage box. The mechanical department records contain the specifications for a number of car orders. The Union Pacific deposited an immense amount of SP (and predecessors and subsidiaries) corporate records with the Stanford Special Collections. Reported at being 2800+ linear feet of records. A significant part of the collection is made up of corporate minute books and accounting journals. |

Correction to the S.P. car numbers: I was off by one. 66-B-1 were numbered 6601-6700 (not 6600-6699), and 66-B-2 were numbered 6701-6800 (not 6700-6799). This certainly is different than the methodology used to assign S.P. steam locomotive number blocks, for example, S.P. 4-8-2s were numbered in the 4300 series starting at 4300, not 4301. I really appreciate the suggestions made thus far, and welcome more... maybe some material is in private hands? Occasional transcription errors are unavoidable on 2nd-generation drawings and text, so if possible its best to go back to the S.P.'s or car builder's original documentation. - Doug Debs |
