Can't remember if I've mentioned it before, but there is another new website devoted to extant steam in North America. Not all of the information as to present location is accurate, and there are only some photos of the engines, but it is well worth a look. Presently, only the US and Canada have entries, but the plan is to include Mexico eventually.

I believe Sunshine Software is the company that was going to release a CD-ROM of North American Steam Locomotives during the mid-1990s. It was to include a picture of every steam locomotive in North America, plus video of working examples. The location data may date back to the mid-1990 time frame.

It was the pending release of this CD-ROM, the availability of Wes Barris' own website, and of course J. David's excellant directory that motivated me to expand my own locomotive database to a worldwide focus. I consider myself very fortunate that this November's release of "Surviving World Steam Locomotives" will include roughly 18800 steam locomotives in roughly 140 countries.

Given the above, I guess they decided to release it as a public website instead. I see they have photographs of 900 steam locomotives in North America, an impressive effort to date.

A quick glance confirms that some of the information is out of date with a number of rather glaring errors.

Yeah, it needs some cleaning up. There were engines listed that as far as I know don't exist. Some operate but are listed display, others are listed in locations they have not been at for years.

I looked at the Florida listings and there are many incorrect entries. There are wrong locations, owners, and even histories. Whoever did that site didn't do any research, apparently. Too bad as the site has a nice look to it.

I just updated the D&RGW #315 in the Colorado section. Very easy to do. I didn't look to see if one could add photos. It looks like a good way to get some added info on all the engines.

Has anyone ever worked on a directory, similar to J. David's Steam Books, listing all surviving passenger train equipment ( rolling stock ) in the U.S.A. ?

It would be a monumental project, but worthwhile for someone with the time to pursue.

Back in 1973 Randolph Kean compiled "The Railfan's Guide to Museum & Park Displays." This comb-bound, typed manuscript, book is about 250 pages and amazingly complete. This was published by Harold E. Cox and it was copyrighted by National Capital Historical Museum of Transportation.

In 1980 RPC Publications published "Private Passenger Car Annual, volume I -- 1980." This was the only one published that I know about. The firm had been putting out Amtrak, etc. roster books. This list compiled by David L. Briggs. proported to cover "Shortline, Tourist Line and Museum Rosters. Corporate and Individual Private Owner Rosters. Cars on Permanent Display."

More recently (4-5 years ago) a gentlemen who was the secretary of the Topeka Chapter of the NRHS sought to compile a list of all remaining Pullman sleeping cars. By the time he was done he was including cars that had once been sleeping cars and rebuilt by the railroads into baggage and work cars. He was looking for a possible publisher to dissimulate the information.
