Post subject: HELP! Need Car Wheels..........
PostPosted: Tue Oct 08, 2002 4:15 pm

Hello to everyone:

Many of you know who I am from my postings and my article in April. I am now the General Superintendent of the Austin and Texas Central Railroad, which operates the Hill Country Flyer, home of SP 786. I am looking for 10 sets of wheels for our P-70 coaches. These wheels can be new or used,as long as they are FRA legal. the wheels are B-36,with a 6x11 journal(roller bearings). You may contact me off list at the e-mail listed here. We need these wheels as soon as possible. Any help you could give me will be appreciated. News on SP 786 is forthcoming next week. thaks for your help in advance!

Probably wore out, they do that you know. But for cripes sake, whatever you do, don't sell the old ones on e-bay. Instead stack them neatly by the depot.

The wheels we have are almost worn out and need replacement. These wheels would perfectly work under a car that will never see live rails again, and I would be willing to swap them for good wheels that might be under those cars.

Just look under "wheels" in the Pocket List of Railroad Officials. In the quantities you mention, you should be able to interest a supplier. Few museums or small-time operators will have that many wheelsets for sale out behind the barn. As of a few years ago, UTC, the United Transportation Corporation seemed to offer the best combination of wheel turning, mounting, axle and bearing work, and was used to dealing with odd passenger and transit wheelsets and small quantities. Prices were reasonable and service fast. There may be other suppliers loser than the east coast, but many will not want to deal with other than standard freight-car wheelsets. Presumably your axles and bearings are salvageable, and all you need are new wheels mounted and turned.

While you are looking them up, also check out ORX. They have worked closely with a number of the historic equipment groups to come up with wheel/axle/bearing combinations for retrofit to cars, tenders and steam engines.
