Northern Ohio Railway Museum Receives $110,000 Grant
From the 20th Century Electric Railway Foundation
Seville, Ohio – Northern Ohio Railway Museum is pleased to announce that it has received a $110,000 grant from the 20th Century Electric Railway Foundation. The San Diego, California based foundation awards grants to trolley museums throughout the United States. The grant will finance the building of a sub-station building, bringing in electricity from Ohio Edison and tying it all into the Museum’s overhead trolley wire system.
The purpose of this project is to develop the necessary resources to provide Northern Ohio Railway Museum with a reliable source of electrical power to run its streetcars now and well into the future. This project will allow the Museum to operate more streetcars, as well as higher power demanding Rapid Transit cars. Currently we generate our own power using a gas generator that is almost as old as the streetcars themselves and has capacity limitations.
The sub-station building will be an extension of the Prunkard Maintenance building and divided into two sections. One section will be for electrical service and AC power conversion to DC. The other section will be used as a work area for the Museum’s overhead line department. We would like to have the project competed before the beginning of our operating season in May 2018.
The 20th Century Electric Railway Foundation was created and given its name to honor its mission: to keep the trolleys alive from the 20th century. It was founded by real estate developers Arthur Jones and Joseph Brogan. Mr. Jones has very strong memories of trolleys dating back to his childhood. Preserving these memories and the passion he has for trolleys is the Foundation’s commitment. There is a renewed excitement regarding trolleys nationwide and the Foundation wants to support that effort far into the future so the younger generations can feel the same excitement that Mr. Jones did at 6 years old.
Messrs. Jones and Brogan Along with Foundation Administrators George and Sheila Cook last visited the Museum in July 2017. They were on a tour to inspect trolley museum projects the Foundation had previously funded. They met with Museum President Walt Stoner and Education Director Gloria McIntyre. At this meeting, the substation project was discussed, along with the prospect of funding it.

Museum Seeks Additional Volunteers
With a more reliable power source and the ongoing expansion of its operating track, the Museum will soon be able to operate additional cars and serve more visitors. With this expected growth, the Museum is seeking additional volunteers.
The key to the success of Northern Ohio Railway Museum has been the dedication of its volunteers. We invite interested parties to join this team as there are many opportunities awaiting. Your skills and efforts will go a long way in helping preserve Ohio's rich electric railway heritage. Experience is not necessary, as we will train. Some positions require museum membership, training and qualification before being able to serve.
Available positions include people orientated positions. Trolley operating crews, tour guides and museum store staff are some of the opportunities in this area. We also seek individuals who are interested in working in our restoration shop. If you like to do metalwork, weld, woodwork, painting, electrical and other trades positions, we welcome you. If you enjoy the outdoors, we have opportunities for you. Positions include; landscapers, equipment operators, track workers and trolley linemen. Finally we seek white collar volunteers. Jobs include; project managers, accountants, grant writers, marketers and publicists. Many other positions are available of widely varying skill levels.

About Northern Ohio Railway Museum
Northern Ohio Railway Museum, a not-for-profit, Ohio corporation as described by section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its goals are to collect, preserve, restore, display and operate streetcars and other railway equipment for the education and enjoyment of the public. The Museum is located at 5515 Buffham Road in Seville, Medina County, Ohio, near Chippewa Lake on 50 acres of land. At this site the Museum has built track and three large buildings to house its collection of historic trolleys, interurbans, and rapid transit cars, most from the northern Ohio area.
