Anyone ride the train on Monday? I was there and thought that they did a real good job except we were pulled back by a GP9.
I also think that although the train was sold out special events like that should be more advertised.

The 514 was necessitated by the lack of turning facilities at Tobyhanna. At one time, it was thought the wye there could be rehabbed, by a propane plant is there now and that ended any thoughts of turning the steamers on the wye.

By the way, the 514 is 44 years old and managed to knock Lima's finest of NKP rails, so don't discount it. It really is a "most useful engine".

As for advertising, this is a topic of some discussion here rather frequently. The NPS is legally prohibited from advertising. Why government can advertise to give away catalogs from the printing office, to recruit military personnel but not inform the public is beyond me.

Fortunately, the internet has been of great value in getting the word out and somewhat lessens the effect that regulation.

As a side note, its ironic that in the past, the way around the advertising prohibition was promotion of national parks by railroads that took people to the "yellowstone" type parks in the West.

Hello All

The excursion monday reminded me why I love the place. There was something amazing about a heavy pacific at speed with a set of pullman green cars. In the days of 25 car hodge-podge consists and Genisis diesel helpers (necessary evils I know...), this was truley a beautiful site. Just watching the train pass the restored station at Gouldsboro doing a good 45 mph really thrilled me. The three of us in the car were just blown away.

The train was actually a sell-out despite the "stealth" advertising. There's alot thats been said about Steamtown (and alot of its true), but monday, monday was magic.

Not Steamtown itself, but it is nice that most of the DL&W stations are still in place on the line and most of them are restored or being restored. And you have every type of construction from wood and brick to Pocono Summit's "Lackawanna standard" poured concrete.

I wasn't knocking the 514 and I understant that there are no place to turn the locomotive there.
I just want to say again you folks are doing a GREAT job.

Sorry, maybe shouldn't have assumed you were unfamiliar.. after years of answering questions like "how do you steer this thing", I tend to assume everybody needs the whole enchilada.
