The current issue of Railroad History has an article on the locomotive which John H. White called a "Southern Foundling" because of the missing and conflicting information on her.

Mr. Peter Claussen bough her from the Museum of Science and Industry at Chicago a couple of years ago. He looked over the old sources and took advantage of a 19th century study, recently translated from the German.

The Mississippi of 1836 seems to be the oldest American locomotive with a horizantal boiler built in the United States.

Go to a railroad library as I did and take a look at the article; I think you will like it.

Thanks for mentioning it. The same issue also has an article on the only surviving "insider," the 1863 4-4-0 "Daniel Nason" of the Boston & Providence, with its cylinders and valves between the frames under the smokebox. Go to rlhs.org to order a copy or to join the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. And for those more intetested in diesels the issue also has the first part of Preston Cook's "Inside EMD" article.

If you are a serious rail enthusiast, R&LHS membership is well worth it.
