In 1988 Bart Barton published Locomotive Displays of Arizona. I’m working on a 30th anniversary update of that book. Have found all of his 23 locos except the one which was titled Cities Service #8 north of Miami AZ off of AZ 188 near the old Pinto Valley Copper Corp. It was Baldwin-Westinghouse #60523, built June 1928, photo by Steve Samples. Anyone know where it is now? Pete Cook

When I was working on Globe back in '09 there was one like that displayed outside...think it was owned by the Gila county historic museum... I don't know much about it, beyond it was an electric mine loco and assorted other mining equipment....it was off hwy 60, between Globe and Miami... |

I couldn't tell you anything with any amount of certainty, but perhaps it might be worth driving up to Jerome to try to find your locomotive. The Jerome State Historic Park showcases the Douglas Mansion. On the south side of the museum is a large collection of mining railway equipment, all lined up and ready for inspection. As a matter of fact, anyone with interest in mining operations ought to check out the museum. Aside from displays on the mine railways themselves, there's lots about the railroads that served the mines. I particularly enjoyed the very old single car air brake test wagon that was well restored and available inside. The whole museum is well worth the admission price. |

But Miami is a whole different part of the state from Jerome, both old copper mining areas but 160 miles apart via what passes as "direct" between the two...... |

Inspiration Copper Co. Would have had it before Cyprus Mining. As Cyprus came along after Inspiration Copper, I doubt they had anything to do with it. The Arizona Eastern RY has nothing to do with it, and never has. My guess is the local historical society owns it and the tank car. It sits on a piece of disconnected track. |

I figured that it likely wasn't up there at Jerome, but I also know how often we find relics far from home and just simply couldn't remember what they had. |

Thanks, William and Roger! That park is the one place in AZ I haven’t been to yet. I can’t believe the guy in the Gila County Historical Museum right there on US 60 didn’t point me in that direction. Said he didn’t know anything about railroads. Heading for Globe! Pete |

The tips from William and Roger were most helpful. My trip to Globe found both locomotives as follows. William’s street-view loco in the weeds was uncovered some time ago and put on display at the Gila County Historical Museum. It still has its trolley pole attached, so this would not be the missing Cities Service #8: Attachment: Gila Museum #unk LR Globe AZ.jpg [ 204.83 KiB | Viewed 9221 times ] Gary’s loco at the Old Dominion Historic Mine Park might not be the missing loco either, because it has a number 30 painted on the side. You sat on the battery box at the left end facing the opposite side where the controller handle is sticking up. Your feet went in the center well with your right knee next to the brake wheel. The Old Dominion Mine closed in 1931 and its assets were purchased by the nearby Miami Copper Co. for its water. Miami Copper became part of Cities Service and was being operated by them in 1982. The Old Dominion was purchased by Bunker Hill Proprietary which became BHP Billiton and is now simply BHP. They opened the Mine Park in 2011. Have sent a request for locomotive details to the director of the Gila County museum, am awaiting a reply. Pete |

According to the records Old Dominion had one Baldwin electrics. 27835 Std 150hp B 30” 20000 220v 3/1906 4-2/75-C-37 Old Dominion Copper Mining & Smelting, Globe, Arizona Here is the loco you were looking for 60523 24” 70hp B 33” 12000 250v 6/23/1928 4-2/35-C-565 Miami Copper #22, Miami, Ariz |
