So during my research for the kits I'm working on, I came across an old picture of Manitoba Paper No. 30 and I'm a bit stumped... Why on god's green earth did someone put smoke deflectors and a feedwater heater on it? I know it's not unheard of to modernize older power, but why do all that to a mogul? Did it get rebuilt at some point, or did MLW turn it out like that for the original Chinese government order back in 1924? I'm honestly stumped and haven't had much luck finding more information on it outside of the steam locomotive database or Old Time Trains on Trainweb. In all seriousness not knowing is driving me batty.

Abitibi had a thing for feedwater heaters. Even one of their Shays has one.

Well that's certainly interesting, but that still begs the question on what the deal is with the smoke deflectors.

One of the links says it was built for China; smoke deflectors were very common on steam locomotives there.
