The news and pictures of the demolition are posted on Historic Atlanta's Facebook Page. A short excerpt:
Quote:
The building was demolished yesterday by Norfolk Southern (NS) in advance of selling the adjacent land ("The Gulch"). We understand that NS was concerned about the liability of hazards associated with the building, but also that they will need to construct a road adjacent to their trackage to maintain access after the sale. The Interlocking Tower sat where this road will go.

We have learned that NS looked internally at retaining or relocating the building but determined that it was infeasible for them to do so. They were within their legal right to demolish the building and there are no regulations requiring oversight or review of these actions. They did not consult with any outside groups.
Here are two Doug Boudrow photographs, taken in March 2018, that show the tower: Railpictures #652088 and Railpictures #651688

Seems strange to me that they wouldn't hire one of the firms specializing in historic 'deconstruction' to salvage some of the materials in the structure. I believe the tile roofing alone had significant value. Much of the internal framing would likely be old-dimensional lumber.

Atlanta's mayor is trying to push thru a deal that includes $1.75 Billion (with a 'B') in local tax money for the development that NSC is reportedly looking to move its HQ to.

Here's an Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper article about that - Torpy at Large: Atlanta’s Gulch giveaway a real gulper
