The major goal of this trip was to see Union Pacific Big Boy #4017, which makes it a clean sweep, of having seen all eight preserved of these giants. There is a fine line between hobby and mental illness, and I may have crossed it. Again, by prearrangement, I was escorted through the shop areas and to see what makes this museum tick. I'd like to point out, as a museum, their two most impressive locomotives, a restored PRR GG1 and the 4017 hold court in a pavilion which also doubles as a community area for public events, dances, weddings, etc. This single area is accessed through a beautiful avenue of illuminated passenger train drum heads. There is an art gallery before that. Any community would want to use a facility of this nature. Outdoors, one of two ALCO "S" switchers draws passengers for rides. There are a number of live steam models displayed, but not functioning. I saw my first ALCO C-430 in the yard, along with the second "Aerotrain". Chalked up another C&O "Kanawha" to my list, too. The AT&SF 2-10-4 is not yet restored, but under cover, along with several other big locos. The sheer size of this one locomotive got me to thinking why the B&LE 2-10-4 should be saved and restored. To stand at track side while such a monster rolled forth must have taken away one's breath. Just an overwhelming creation, probably reminiscent of seeing something like the "Graf Zeppelin" floating overhead. There is an Atlantic Coast Line diner getting the full restoration treatment. It's going to be purple and silver, much like see was in the 1950's, as I remember them in Sunnyside Yard. Everything is getting paint in turn. Yes, some restoration is needed on things stored outdoors, but there is plenty of track room and the museum is connected to live rail. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing |

I always have harbored a insane wish for the Dwight D. to get her turn at a running restoration. Imagine how different that would be. While not as large or impressive as other engines, it's got a unique shape and sound with those 3 cylinders. And besides we can't let the brits have all the fun. |
