Post subject:  Conrail N21 21264
Well since word is out and the dust has settled, I bought this car from CSX last month. It is in what I considere to be amazingly complete and good condition unmolested considering it sat unlocked in the weeds for almost 10 years.

It is now at the Wabash Valley Railroad Museum.

Did you ever get a reply from the CRHS? I never saw an email come through and I thought I was part of the inbox for that type of request.

No. I figured they are busy. I used the info request form on the website. I just submitted it again so you can see if you are still on the list.

What I have found while cleaning up the car is somebody was smart enough to hide things of "value" so they didn't walk away. An example is the chimney cap. It was tucked away under the ice box that was laying on its side.

That's a really nice example you found!

Was it originally NYC? The style looks it to me, or could be PC as I know PC continued building cabooses on NYC plans after formation. Similar to what they did with the NYC transfer cabooses. I'm not familiar with Conrail and if they kept building them.

MEC_557 -

The Conrail N21 class was the only order of cabooses that CR ever purchased. They were numbered from 21201 through 21313; a total of 113 cars. Builder was Fruit Growers Express of Alexandria, Virginia.

We cleaned her up a bit on one side. I didn't want to repaint it but after making repairs it wasn't going to match.

I still have some detail work to do but it looks a lot better.

The opposite side is all original, doesn't look that bad and I really don't want to repaint it but my wife is making noises about it not being the same. We will see.

So one side down.

I'm glad to see that SOMEBODY managed to acquire and preserve one of these cars. In my humble opinion, I think that it's historically significant as one of the (only?) cabooses built by Fruit Growers Express. Also, a significant car built for Conrail, not any of the predecessor railroads.

FGE built more than a handful of cabooses. B&O bought 80 full bay window cabooses. L&N ordered a bunch of bay window transfer style cabooses just before the merger that were delivered as Family Lines. I’m sure there are others. We have CSX #16611 (L&N/FM #611) on our property.
