Post subject:  FP45 ATSF 108 public unveiling after overhaul
On October 6th, 2018 ATSF 108 will be unveiled to the public for the first time after a multi-year overhaul to return the locomotive to its original Santa Fe as delivered number 108 appearance. The locomotive was acquired by the Southern California Railroad Museum dba OERM in Perris California and has been involved in a multiyear overhaul overseen by Project Manager Jeff Williams. Picture includes a former Santa Fe Cajon Sub Rescue Mechanic, who is assisting in the overhaul and actually had worked on this locomotive when in service.

Tentatively the reveal will occur at 10am, once I here more details I will update the post. You can visit http://www.OERM.org for address, directions and hours.

First the CSRM/PLA Krauss-Maffei, and now this: who says steam has the only real magic in locomotive restorations?

Good news!

One thing, I couldn't find any mention of this event on OERM's website. If it is on there, they need to make it easier to find.

The announcement comes from after the museum's regular board meeting this past Saturday. I am sure details and an event will be created once the information is given to the marketing department.

I really wish we could get 2 or 3 of these together for a charter on the SW Cheif or for one of the Santa Fe main line steam excursions.

Is the locomotive fully operable? Could it be moved on a class 1? I assume it's not PTC compliant, so could not operate as a lead unit.

Locomotive will be fully operational and is not PTC compliant. SCRM/OERM operates as non-insular. Any move to the General System with museum equipment for a special operations/excursion would require coordination with the FRA to determine if it would effect the Museum's Non-insular filing. Additionally, there would be coordination with the RCTC that owns the San Jacinto Branch that SCRM/OERM has a connection to (currently out of service) and their rail operator, Metrolink. I do believe there is a PTC exemption if the locomotive is operated within X number miles of its home terminal, PTC is not required, again this is hearsay information. I am also assuming here, but being that the San Jacinto branch has a fairly decent grade coming out of Riverside, I would suspect that there could be requirements to have PTC regardless. So there is a possibility depending on the requirements and approval from the stakeholders involved, but i would not plan on anything in the very near future.

Just to be clear. Interchanging does not necessarily have any bearing on your partial-compliance status with the FRA. Your compliance status would change only if you are interchanging interstate commerce which would be to say SCRM were to decide to get into the freight business and start shipping reefer cars of oranges out onto the general railroad system. However bringing in new museum pieces or shipping out others would not constitute interstate commerce and would have no bearing on your compliance status.

Ummm.... Santa Fe has been gone since the mid-'90s and they never ran very many steam excursions, anyway.

As for using it on the SW Chief, good luck with that. See Amtrak's policy.
