Anyone know anything new about this EMC SW1?

it is the ONLY Lehigh Valley unit still remaining in LV colors!
(a few LV units have been REpainted, but this one is original paint from before Conrail!)

I heard several years ago that a museum was looking to preserve it, but I havent heard anything new in ages..
anyone have any news?

built 4/3/39
Retired 1976 - sold in 1977 to "Direct Reduction Co." of Rockwood, TN
112 is the oldest known surviving LV locomotive.

Would anyone like to help me save the ex LV SW-1 119? I have the front head light in my back yard. I used to work on it till the mill split. All they did was put a quicky coat of green paint on it and the the lines and logos show through nice.
I have our locomotiive shop 2 miles as the crow flys away fom it. I'm also Vice president mechanical of 501-c3 that owns and runs tains. it will take some truck work and other things to make it useable but nothing that can't be done. I don't think they will donate it but maybe with some outside support they might. They were talking about trading it to us for a b-unit and converting the b to a slug our the 119 to a slug. Let me know if there is any interest. thanks

So I take it the steel mill that owns it still has an operating railroad?
they would want a slug to go with their operating units?
hmmmm..seems like old slugs are very common..
would be a shame to cut the 119 or a B-unit, both historic units, into a slug when so many slugs are already around!

I run the locomotive shop for Industrial Railway switching and services, We serve the U.S. Steel end of the mill. Republic technoliges own the 119. The guys running thier railroad used to work for us and there is some bad blood. If you know were we can pick up a slug right I'm sure we can save her.
The group I'm V.P. of is the Lake Shore Railway association, We operate the Lorain & West Virgina operating out of Wellington Ohio. I'm also a vounteer on the Ohio central steam team.
The power to be has a E-8 and if we don't use it we won't use anything, ego thing you know how it is.If I can draw some outside help I have enough inside help to pull off useing it. an E8 to pulll 3 ex Long Island cars on flat track is a waste!!!!!! (and we have to run both engines at all times!) especially if you use it for work train service. E-mail off board and I give you more of the goorry details and how a few of use can change them. I've wnted to save this unit for years and need some outside help.

Man if you wanted to bring this engine back to PA, I'd be up for that.

Sorry, but I think w/ the impending loss of Beth Steel, the Allentown-Beth-Easton area needs some relic of its industrial past!

A gentle reminder that the Wilmington & Western still has possession of the fully-operable ex-Ocean City Western, nee-LV SW1 114.

The W&W has been zealously defensive, IMO, of using SW1's because the only diesel models ever permitted on the line in B&O and Chessie days were SW1's and lighter Alco switcher models (not RS's). However, I believe the primary reason for that restriction is being replaced as we type--the wooden treatles washed out by the tropical storms. It's possible that, once the trestles are replaced with newer steel trestles, the line might be capable of handling slightly larger power, and something *could* be traded for the 114.

I'm not suggesting the W&W would trade or anything--just giving you options closer to home should this 112/119 proposal fall through for whatever reason.

Super, you can always start with the ex CNJ SW-1 sitting in Pttiston. That's closer to home!

I think there might be some confusion over this locomotive. As the photo link shows, as of summer 2003 this loco still had LV paint (no green coat) and its headlight. Last time I saw it, late winter/early spring 2004, it was still that way. It is located at Horsehead Enterprises in Rockwood, TN - that is the last corporate name I had. A local group, the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum, tried several times several years ago to get a donation of the loco or work out a deal, but basically got no answer from Horsehead. It's not easy to see or get to . . . Don't know exactly what it's current status is, so the other info in this thread might be more up-to-date, but as before, last time I saw it, it was still LV, still w/headlight.

I belive you're refering to the 112 in TN. I'm refering to the 119 in Lorain Ohio, It's deffinently green and I personally took the old head off and put dual seal beams on it for better vision in the bar mill.
