In researching my upcoming (Yes Bob and Hume, I am working on it, it will just be a while.) article on Southern (U.K) Merchant Navy, West Country, and Battle of Britain Pacifics, I have come across a very good book. It is titled "British Railways Standard Steam Locomotives" By E.S. Cox (London: Ian Allen), 1966. It has some interesting information about the extensive testing that BR did of existing locomotives. It is worth a look, with good technical information.
