The folks at the Wilmington & Western Railroad have been very busy working on our B&O Wagon Top boxcar. The car was preserved by a member who purchased it from scrap in 1983. For the last three decades its been used for storing spare parts. About two years ago we found ourselves on the receiving end of a grant to build a steam generator car to give us more flexibility with our cold-weather trains. After careful consideration the boxcar was chosen to become a steam generator car. You can see it is painted in B&O Royal Blue and eventually will wear B&O Railway Express lettering. It will be the only one of the three in preservation that represents the 125 cars of this type that were used on passenger trains. It is numbered 1872 which is just outside the series of the last (1944) B&O Express Wagon Tops 1875-1899. We ran out of time before the lettering could be applied so look for that in 2019.
It will be clicking off a lot of miles in December running on daily trains from 7-23 & 26-30 December. The boiler system is working fantastic for our 5 steam-heated passenger cars.
