We were railfanning Enola, PA and came across a PRR DD1-A container from atleast the 30’s. The box sits roughly 20 feet from the road and 40-50 ft from the NS RoW. It appears that the box was dumped here or had fallen off of a train. The original lock appeared to be still on. The box has PRR 3948 on the side. It won’t let me upload any photos right now, but does anyone know the history of this and who, if anyone, owns it? Could it be one of the only ones in the world? Thanks in advance.

It seems to me that when in service, containers were sealed with car seals, not locks, same as a boxcar. The lock would tend to indicate the container was put to some sort of company service, likely as a storage shed for track, car, or signal dept. That's not to say it isn't long abandoned, and anyone who knew what was stored there long retired, but I doubt you are going to find it full of electric curling irons consigned to Gimbels :-)

There are a few of these around that were re-purposed for storage.

It is around (40.2882056, -76.9295231). I cannot find the exact location for it due to brush, but it is in between the rails and North a Enola road somewhere along those coordinates.
