Post subject:  Red River and Gulf back under cover

As many of you are aware, Red River and Gulf was moved out from the car shop at Long Leaf, Louisiana on October 15, so that the deteriorated track could be removed and the subgrade underneath the locomotive could be stabilized and new track and ties put down. The first step was to move the log car which resided behind the locomotive to the front of the shop and the rest of the track removed. The museum staff and our CMO built a tractor ramp at the rear of the shed, and within days they had the rear 2/3 of the shop area stabilized and were laying ties and track. By the afternoon of November 15, the log car had been moved to the new track at the rear of the shed and the next week a mini-track hoe brought in to finish the job of subgrade removal and stabilzation. In a matter of days, the crew had all the ties in, levelled and 1914 60# rail, located elsewhere on the mill site tied together and the engine was ready to come home. On Friday, November 30, without all of the fancy block and tackle arrangement that was used to remove the engine from the shed, a simple pull of the cable by the dozer sufficed to put the 106 back on new track and back home.

Good job! Glad she's back under cover. She looks amazingly complete. Can't wait to get down there to see it.

Fantastic job. You all have done so much since I visited the overgrown site before it was opened as a museum in about 1995. Keep up the great work; I live further from Long Leaf than I did a decade ago; but a revisit is in order.
