On a visit to Elizabeth, NJ for some Northeast Corridor railfan photography, I crossed under the NEC to the side opposite of the well known former Central of New Jersey train station.

Low and behold - there's a building that sure looked like it has origins serving a railroad.

No doubt, a surviving freight house located along the abandoned portion of CNJ's line to both Newark and Jersey City.

So - enjoy the pic, and for anyone with details, specifically the date the building was erected, please let us know - the whole of the World Wide Web seems strangely void of such info. Today, the building serves as home to an office of the Parking Authority of Elizabeth.

I certainly didn't realise it was extant when on vacation in the area last year (7 days with an NJT season ticket, staying in downtown Newark (!)). I peered down on the overgrown eastside tracks from the PRR station and wandered round the CNJ station, but was totally unaware that the freight house existed.
Would have made the effort to see it, if I'd have known it was still there.

Might one assume that's copper patina on the clock tower? Certainly a classic CNJ building.

I can tell you that building is definitely the former CNJ Freight House. Many times I ran trains past that building.

I've had good luck with finding build dates on buildings by checking the county tax assessor's records. In many locations they are on-line. Sometimes they have to be taken with a grain of salt. In one community I was interested in every building before about 1910 was dated 1910, probably because the earlier record set didn't include the build date.
