Hi all, new forum member here.

With the Siemens Charger slowly taking over the nation’s passenger trains, the end of the P42 fleet is now on the horizon. The original PRIIA fleet of Chargers is now completely in service, displacing P42s back to the national network, and Amtrak’s own Chargers are slated for delivery starting in 2021.

We still have a few years to go, but it might be time to start thinking about these units in the context of preservation. I am always surprised at how these units seem to be disregarded by railfans, and I hope this does not influence how musems or other preservation outfits might feel about potentially saving one.

I have always found them to be good-looking design, and in my opinion the GE “chug” and HEP mode “hum” are just as impressive sounding as the F40 “screamers” were before them. Is anyone else fond of these units or am I in the minority here?

With more an more of the uh.. "Younger Crowd" finally getting noticed in preservation, I imagine we will foresee one saved at some point.

Hopefully as the “younger crowd” matures, the cringeworthiness factor will come down a little bit and the quotation marks will be needed a little less.
