Today saw the loading of two rare and very nice Union Pacific caboose trucks in Kent Washington. Donated by the owners of a recently demolished CA1, and help from members of the North West railfans FaceBook page we salvaged a lot from this unfortunate situation. Thanks to generous donations via Go Fund Me and other means the transportation was entirely covered, they will arrive in Cheyenne on Monday and be unloaded ready to be placed under our CA caboose 2516. This proves the point to us that Facebook has a serious place in making people aware of our groups aims.

Both platforms are very useful. Facebook is great about getting the news out about an event or project. Forums such as RYPN are great for going into more detail about the event or project. This platform promotes more lengthy discussions that the Facebook platform isn't set up for, as well as providing a bit more permanence of the conversation.

A couple of months ago I used a Facebook fundraiser to quickly raise some money to purchase a water pump for the J&L 58 project. We raised $720 and I spent all of that on a Honda pump, suction and discharge hoses and quick disconnect fittings. That was an ideal use of the FB fundraiser feature. Set a definable goal for a low amount, raise that amount and then make use of the funds raised. I have seen some try FB fundraisers asking for larger amounts for less defined projects and they rarely reach their goals.

The Events feature on FB is also a great low cost way to promote special events.

I guess the moral of this story is that we should not be afraid to use all of the tools in the toolbox.

BTW that was a great feat finding and saving those trucks!

Excellent work!

Just so this goes on the record, this is what the (now demolished) parts donor caboose looked like.
It appears it was attached to a now demolished building, and the caboose was used as office space.

OUCH! Hard to believe that such an intact, small & relatively easy to move historic car would be scrapped nowadays. Glad the parts are being used to save another car. Seems like an example of a naive owner that someone reached too late, but not completely too late.

The ARCHES "Captive Cabeese" book lists this as being a 1907 former Northern Pacific caboose, NP 1237/10237, BN 10887. Are you sure those are UP trucks, or are they just close enough for your needs?

Ouch....it looks relatively intact but was rotten as a pear, just look at the siding sliding down, that tells you that it's framing has gone rotten underneath as well, and so it had. We believe it's a CA1 as the style certainly suggests and the sloping cupola, the remains of the numberboard above the door are coming here too so we shall soon find out. However the trucks are perfect when you need wood caboose trucks.

Job done this morning, UP trucks for a1913 UP caboose. Thanks to all that helped and donated.

It is now known to be OWR&N 3255 built in 1924 and renumbered to UP 25826. An unknown survivor.
