| Post subject: | Gray Granite Railroad Looking for a plain bearing Wheelset |
Hello all, The Gray Granite Railroad Company is in search of a plain bearing wheelset to replace a condemned wheel with a high and thin flange on former LIRR N22A hack number C-61. Axle Bearing size is 5x9 and wheel diameter is 33 inch non ribbed back steel. Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated! |

Any decent wheel shop should be able to take your condemned wheel set and press the plates off and make a new axle. Assuming your wheel plates are good.... Fred |

Fred, Post edited to clairify that we need a wheelset, not an axle as it is a condemned wheel on this wheelset that has a high and thin flange that is the problem which should have been specified originally, my apologies. |

The LIRR sent 5 cabooses of this class to scrap, Frontier Industries in Conneaut, OH. Photos of the cabooses on flat cars are linked below: Wheelsets (and other parts that you might need) may still exist. If your axle is good, the old wheels can be pressed off and new wheels pressed on. This might be cheaper than acquiring a whole wheel set. |

What could probably be used is a CJ-33 wheel, which use to be common. The problem will be to find one with a rough bore small enough, espically if this is a black collar axle. I assume that it has already been determined that the wheel can not be reprofilled by turning? There are lots of freight car trucks sitting around at places with antique equipment. Keep asking around, I am sure you will be able to find a usable wheel set. The journals may be etched so it will have to go across an axle lathe. |
