I saw an episode of 'Salvage Dawgs' yesterday, which showed the crew removing items from the former C&O roundhouse in Clifton Forge, VA. I had thought these facilities were going to be preserved...evidently not, as per this article: https://www.wdbj7.com/content/news/Clif ... 78143.html Anyone have any other updates? |

The turntable shows up at the 50-second mark in the TV report. Anyone need a turntable before this gets cut up? |

If I recall correctly, that table is a nice long one, at 115 feet--just long enough to take an Allegheny, which had a wheelbase of 113 feet. And surprisingly, the table at Brunswick, Md., which I think is the same length, was still in place as recently as a couple of weeks ago. |

I don't know if it's still true, but CSX still occasionally used the Brunswick turntable when I was there a little over 10 years ago, I rode it a couple of times on power I was turning. So, don't count on that one as abandoned yet. |

John- What kinds of things were the Salvage Dogs guys getting? Lumber, etc., or anything of interest to railfans? |

I only see 2 listings on the Salvage Dawgs Ebay Architecturaldog seller listing page that are from the C&O Clifton Forge shops wich are rail supports from inside one of the shop buildings. The Ebay item numbers are #264195436853 and #132952258574 Each listing shows some photos of inside the shop where they were removed. |

Hugh-the Salvage Dawgs were removing a lot of what I'd call corrugated glass windows, wooden paver blocks from the roundhouse floor, some industrial steel (which could be remade into industrial-chic tables etc), that I can recall. The episode also showed one of them walking out onto the turntable, finding it was still operable, then getting it moving. |

The Brunswick, MD turntable was long enough to turn two cab-unit diesels at once. Photo from 1985.

If I remember right, the turntable was donated to the C&O Heritage Center across the yard from the shops and moved there a few years ago. Perhaps the video clip is old? (I haven’t watched it yet) |

The turntable in Brunswick has been "done" for quite a while as far as being used by CSX again. It's been over 10 years (maybe closer to 15) since it was used. The last tracks that led to the table were torn up in 2011. It's now partially fenced off along the access road, and is now home to several small trees. The operator's shack is pretty well stripped, too. |

Hugh (again)-this link depicts what the Salvage Dawgs got, and are currently selling: https://shop.blackdogsalvage.com/Salvag ... CO-Railway The 'corrugated glass' term I used is close to their term: corrugated chicken wire glass. |

That episode first aired last summer. Some of the items they removed have probably already found new homes. The steel casting removed were pedestals that held up the rail over the inspection pit. They had to remove the rail to remove the pedestals. I doubt they show all they remove from a property. So there may be other items that never made it into the show. |
