Is any C&O M-1 class Steam-Turbine-Electric of 1947-48 vintage preserved?

Does anybody have disposition data, life, etc.?

Drawing? Photos? etc.?

All of the C&O Turbines were scrapped, with very short preservation lives. They were part of the ill-fated, stillbord "The Chessie" daylight train between Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati. Of course, several of the cars are still around, as well as 4-6-4, number 490, which wwas rebuilt from a F-19 4-6-2, and streamlined to match the train for the Louisville and Newport News connecting sections.

Check www.steamlocomotive.com for a good list of surviving steam locomotives.

It is discussed in Staufer's book C&O Power. Which is out of print, but still possible to find.

Have learned that all three were really scrapped. Rumor about one still alive and well in B&O Museum are false, per B&O Museum's staff.

Still seeking some photos, etc. to illustrate the article. A line drawing would be outstanding. Nobody has claimed to have ever seen one.

Model Railroader magazine, Feb 1971 issue has a complete set of line drawings for the M1: engineer's side elevation of loco and tender, various sections, photos. Good quality, too.
