Having been involved in the restoration of a locomotive, I had to become familiar with Part 230. While Part 230 has now been around for 19 years, I think some clarification is still in order. Anyone out there who can comment, please do. Under Part 230 any locomotive that is operating must have its regular inspections and all boiler work must become part of the current Form 4. When it comes to the 1472 day inspection, it seems that with the complete measurement of the boiler and the recalculation of the MAWP, we are basically generating a NEW Form 4 or at least re-qualifying the old one. With the 1472, does the Form 4 reset, leaving all of the historical repairs and modifications behind? A "clean slate", so to speak? Thanks in advance to the engineers and other boiler guys who might comment. |

Thanks, Kelly! I was involved with restoration of the Saginaw Timber No. 2 and worked with the owner on some of the documentation. Because the locomotive was "retired", he had to submit what was basically a new Form 4 for FRA approval. He did have repair documentation from the time the loco was owned by the Cadillac and Lake City in the 1970's up until 1999 when the loco went out of service. But the difficulty the owner had in developing the new Form 4 led me to believe that with the 1472 day inspection he was essentially "resetting" the Form 4. Never occurred to me that he was also required to submit Form 19s for all the repair work done during the 1472. I just thought that was part of the new Form 4. Turns out that steam locomotive boilers are not that much different than aircraft when it comes to documenting repairs and modifications! |
