The GSMR ran freight to/from Andrews over Red Marble Grade once upon a time. It would be interesting to see this make a return.

I believe the Durango and Silverton was once a common carrier since its sale from the D&RG. Not sure when they stopped being one....perhaps a real narrow guage freight in the offing?

I sincerely hope they catch a lot of them.... recreating a mixed train and perhaps even steam haulage in someplace closer to home than Strasburg would be wonderful.

Durango could open up commuter rail if they really wanted to be ambitious. Not joking, if the track speed was upgraded you could service to Hermosa or even just in town. Main Ave. is packed during the school year and a summer shuttle to the north end of town could move tourists around to the hotels or to float the river.

The Durango & Silverton trackage ceased being a common carrier sometime in the late 60s when the trackage between Durango, CO and Chama, NM was lifted causing the D&S to be isolated from the rest of the national rail system.

I don't think he literally means becoming a commuter railroad - more like using existing equipment to run shuttle services, at faster speeds than current track speeds allow.
