1972 Chrysler trolley car for sale

Nothing to do with me just thought it was interesting. Apparently old car body cobbled into this. On the other hand no track maintenance (or track ) required. Anyone know the history on the body?

Just another one of those ersatz "Trolley" motorized vehicles that are running around the streets hauling tourists. Nothing historical here. Seems to have been more of a movie prop than an actual conveyance.

Looking closely at the photos I believe you are right. According to the ad it is an "Actual 1900's Trolley".

I saw this car listed a while back but couldn't find any information on it. I guess if you had a good set of builder's drawings and a lot of fortitude you could do something with it but it's obviously heavily modified.

Hollywood is still cranking out fake trolleys, btw:

It doesn't look like a historic body to me; the curves (or lack thereof) are all wrong. The classic wagon wheel clearance was a graceful concave curve often joining a convex curve below the belt rail. The "Chrysler trolley" is just two flat slabs and an offset; much easier to build from plywood. From the general look of the interior and apparent age of the chassis it was done a good number of years ago, but not historic, except perhaps as a movie prop.

I sent an email to the owner, maybe we will get the real story. I agree it's too slab sided, but we do not know how much of the original body was still intact at the time of the conversion (if one was even used).

UPDATE I spoke with the owner, he has only owned the thing for a few years. He said the upper part of the body was indeed a trolley, but the year is only a guess on his part. I asked him to take a look at any original pieces and give me a call if he can find something that can add to the puzzle. Someone must know the history on this? It's on a motorhome chassis if that helps any.

Too bad no pix of the headlining or upper deck. The side window pier posts don't look right to me, either.

You're probably thinking of Car 1058, a "kitbash" that worked the San Pedro Waterfront Line until 2015:

The PE 950 class car body that the 1058 was made from had been one of two that were used at a shooting club. I do not recall seeing any reference to the cars being wrecked. For the remodel Fellows replaced the original three-window ends with the typical PE 5-window ends and also lengthened the car to match the PE 1000-series cars by adding a window to the former open section.

Mr. Fellows also had a PE "Hollywood" car that he acquired from the scrapper and mounted it on a similar pair of military stering bogies. He did extensive work to fix the body of that car and after his death it was eventually acquired by Orange Empire.

For the movie "Who framed Roger Rabbit" the 1058 appeared in the distance of one scene. The studio also measured and photographed the "Hollywood" cars at Orange Empire and made up a rubber-tired representation of these cars for use in the film -- this is probably the car seen above.

The two reproduction 500-series cars used by the Port of Los Angeles were started by a contractor located in Seattle. But, because of problems the Port took the uncompleted cars to San Pedro and completed them using direct employees.
