News Regarding "Surviving World Steam" for November 2002

The "Surviving World Steam" project is documenting the last of the world's remaining steam locomotives, ships, boats, vehicles, and
reciprocating pumps in the form of searchable databases and digital photographs. Roughly 30,000 steam engines in 150 countries and over
1,000 photographs are included in the Surviving World Steam project. For more information please visit my website at:

http://www.pernet.net/~james1/us_steam/ordering.htm

*** Contents ***

· "Surviving World Steamships" now available
· "Surviving World Steam Locomotives" has been updated for November 2002
· "Surviving World Steam Vehicles" has been updated for November 2002
· "Steam Lizards" Group update
· "Surviving World Steam" Educational Guide has been expanded

*** "Surviving World Steamships" now available ***

"Surviving World Steamships" is the third CD-ROM in the "Surviving World Steam" series. It includes:

· Vessels propelled by a steam engine and boiler
· Vessels propelled by a steam turbine and boiler
· Vessels propelled by a steam turbine and nuclear reactor

The vessels included in the database include working, preserved, and stored examples. Steamboats and steamships which are grounded or
derelict in shallow water will be included as well. Vessels which are sunk in deep water will not be included; only those that are visible
without diving.

The initial release includes 1649 vessels from 55 countries, 90 photographs, and one Quicktime Movie. It is thought that this total is 72% of the estimated 2400 steam vessels worldwide. (Steamboats as small as steam launches are included, and make most of the missing vessels.)

"Surviving World Steamships" sells for U$32.95. To read more about "Surviving World Steamships", or to order a copy, please visit my website at http://www.pernet.net/~james1/steamship .

Thanks to John & Joy Ackrill, Ray Barnes, Bergesen d.y. ASA, Bill Billett, David Brierly (San Diego Maritime Museum), Blair Burkhardt (San Diego Maritime Museum), Daren Byrne, Jean Francois Couedou, Geoff Coward, Sean Cullen, David Engholm Collection, T.J. Gaffney, Ray Gardiner, Eduardo & Jose A. Gomez Guinda, Steve Haverty, San Francisco
Maritime National Historical Park, Ian MacFarlane, Military Sealift Command, John Neville, Gary Ouderkirk, Phillips Petroleum Co., Lee
Rusetzke (Steamer Columbia Foundation), Paul Sharpe, the United States Navy, and Conny Wickberg (Sterna Bulk) for their help and photographs contributed to the CD-ROM. If you would like your museum or organization to be represented by a photograph of your vessel, please feel free to send it to me at james1@pernet.net.

*** "Surviving World Steam Locomotives" has been updated for November 2002 ***

The "Surviving World Steam Locomotives" CD-ROM was the first CD-ROM in the "Surviving World Steam" series, and has been updated for the month of November 2002. It now contains 18,742 steam locomotives; up 250 since the last update in May 2002 and 91% or more of the total worldwide.

The number of pictures in the database is now up to 650, and includes representative examples of builders and classes the world over. Examples of most surviving classes in North America, the UK, and much of Europe are also now included. Thirteen sound clips are also included.

Those who have already purchased a copy can order an update. The update includes 200 pictures, many of which do not ship with the program. Updates include an "Update Wizard", which transfers pictures and sound clip links to the update from your current copy before overwriting it. Thus, you needn't worry about losing your picture collection with each update.

"Surviving World Steam Locomotives" sells for U$32.95. To read more about "Surviving World Steam Locomotives", or to order a program or update CD-ROM, please visit my website at http://www.pernet.net/~james1/us_steam .

Thanks to Michael Bahls, Richard A. Bowen, Matt Conrad, Jean Francois Couëdou, Geoff Coward, Sean Cullen, Raymond Dewley, Dave Dye, Mark A. Dubout, Ray Gardiner, Trevor Heath, Mary E. Kirkpatrick, Roger Kirkpatrick, Dave Lathrop, David Longman, Shaun McMahon, Oleg Prut, Graham Roberts, Nathan Westendorf, Scott Wickert, and Steve Zuiderveen for the latest round of photographs.

*** "Surviving World Steam Vehicles" has been updated for November 2002 ***

"Surviving World Steam Vehicles" is the second CD-ROM in the "Surviving World Steam" series. It was first released in November, 2001; and has
been updated for November 2002.

It now includes 9784 vehicles from 56 countries, 337 photographs, and one Quicktime Movie. No one knows how many steam vehicles remain; my best guess is that this represents 85% of the total worldwide.

"Surviving World Steam Vehicles" sells for U$32.95. To read more about "Surviving World Vehicles", or to order a copy, please visit my website at http://www.pernet.net/~james1/steam_tr .

Thanks to Gary Boomgaarden, Allen Bupp, Linda Butler, the Chain Engine Group, Lie Tjeng Chiao, Jean Francois Couëdou, Sean Cullen, Stephen Daws, Raymond Dewley, Rob Dickinson, Alan Dunderdale, Dave Dye, George Erhart, Jim Gardiner, Ray Gardiner, Trevor Heath, Heather Anne Hefner, K.R. Hough, Richard Jenkins, Blake Malkamaki, Jacob Merriwether, Paul Pavlinovich, Bob Poli, Derek Rayner, Graham Roberts, James Roberts, Paul Rogalsky, Paul Sharpe, Mark Shulaw, Richard Sternberg, Lee Michael Keith Thake, Ian Thomson, Dick Tombrink, Wouter J.K. De Weerdt, and Dr. David West for their help and for most of the photographs included in the CD-ROM.

*** "Steam Lizards" Group update ***

"Steam Lizards" are direct acting reciprocating steam pumps. They were built by dozens if not hundreds of builders worldwide such as Worthington and G&J Weir. They make up many of the world's last working steam engines; with hundreds if not thousands still at work in chemical plants, refineries, boilerhouses, and other locations worldwide. They are still in production by a handful of companies worldwide.

To produce a CD-ROM of surviving "steam lizards" would be impossible. Who knows how many are still at work behind the security fences of facilities worldwide, in the holds of ships (both steam and diesel), not to mention the number in private hands. Furthermore, one must take "live steam" pumps (or pumps for live steam equipment) into consideration as well, since the only difference between "full" and "live steam" is size.

So, I decided to take a different approach. Instead of a CD-ROM, I have formed a group on Yahoo pertaining to "steam lizards". It is located at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/steam_lizards

Response to date has been very good for such a narrow subject matter. A total of 51 members belong to the group to date, second only to "Surviving World Steam Locomotives". The online "survivor's database" contains 202 pumps to date. There are over a hundred photographs, both contemporary and historical, in the Photos section. A good selection of links is available in the Links section.

The file section now includes plans for live steam size vertical simplex and duplex pumps. It also includes a "Steam Lizards" poster (in the form of a jpeg file), and other useful documents. The "Steam Lizards" poster can also be ordered as a 15" x 11" poster on the order page at http://www.pernet.net/~james1/us_steam/ordering.htm

New for November 2002 is a picture on the Steam Lizard Group home page contrasting a Dean Bros. simplex pump pulled for an overall in 2002 with
a 1905 post card from the Dean Bros. Steam Pump company. Although nearly a hundred years separate the two, the similarities are striking. Rob Dickinson has also given a preview of the "sugar lizards" found in the sugar mills of Java, Indonesia on his "International Stationary
Steam" website. More details and photographs will be available soon to the group, thanks to group member Ray Gardiner.

Membership is free, and open to anyone; thanks to everyone who has joined to date. I also would like to thank the ASC Port Neches SBR Plant, Michael Bahls, Fred Crammond, Raymond Dewley, Rob Dickinson, Ray Gardiner, Hume Kading, Paul Kurilecz (Age of Steam Museum, Dallas), Will Jordon, Terry Lane, S.C. "Doc" Lewis (Heber Valley Railway), Bill Little, Jesse Livingston, Keith Messent, Rick Rowlands (Tod Engine Foundation), Paul Sharpe, Southern Forest Museum & Research Center, John A. Taubeneck, Kerrie Thomson, Dale Ward (McNeill Street Pumping Station), and John M. Whitlock for their help and support to date.

*** "Surviving World Steam" Educational Guide has been expanded ***

The "Surviving World Steam" Educational Guide is a companion to the Surviving World Steam series. The information in this guide is geared towards educators or interpreters with limited knowledge about steam engines, although more knowledgeable users will find plenty of useful information as well.

The Educational Guide has been expanded to include information on the fields found in "Surviving World Steamships". The material on "Steam
Lizards" has also been re-written to better compliment the "Steam Lizards" group website. It is now up to 52 pages, and is coil bound with cardstock covers.

The "Surviving World Steam" Education Guide sells for U$11.95. To read more about the Educational Guide, or to order a copy, please visit my
website at http://www.pernet.net/~james1/us_steam/teacher.htm .

***

In closing, I want to once again extend a warm "thank you" to everyone who has supported "Surviving World Steam", either through sending
photographs or data, or by purchasing a CD-ROM, or both. Over 100 CD-ROMs have been sold to date; and the "Surviving World Steam" master database contains 30,000 steam survivors from 154 countries and over 1900 photographs to date. Without the input of dozens of users and references worldwide, none of this would have been possible. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact me.
