While on another tirade, i referenced the above author. It dawned on me that in a lot of ways he has been to railroad business history what O. Winston Link was to the photographic record However, we never hear much about him. I have copies of "Enterprise Denied" written in the early '70's and unfortunately available only in secondary markets and "Railroads Triumphant" written in the early 90's and still available. The latter is sort of an all encompassing history-the former is concerned with the regulatory and political environment from 1900-1917 and how the ICC took a adversarial role over railroads, consistently denying them the freedom that was accorded to other businesses and how future U.S. Supreme Court justice Brandeis made his name litigating RR cases. If you have any financial background, you won't know whether to laugh or cry when you read the accounts of US Senators taking to the senate floor to decry the evils of no-par value stock. superheater@beer.com |
