I am trying to identify a locomotive that is supposed to be ex-UP. The Polson Brothers Logging Co. bought it between 1896 and 1902 possibly in 1897. It is a 4-6-0 shown as 45 tons and identified as a Baldwin. Here are two photos c1900:

Any information welcome.

Here is a photo, could it be one of these at that late date? The caption where I found the photo reads: "This is a photo of the Polson Brothers Logging Co. out of Hoquiem, Wa. This pic was taken in 1940. The Line was started in the 1880's. The company was bought out in the 1950's by Rayonier Inc, who operated it until the the late 1960's."

I have always loved that photo and the #10 is probably there. It was scrapped in 1955. Almost everything in the caption is wrong.

"This is a photo of the Polson Brothers Logging Co. out of Hoquiem, Wa."
Polson Brothers became Polson Logging Co. in 1903.

"The Line was started in the 1880's."
Polson started railroad logging in 1896.

"The company was bought out in the 1950's by Rayonier Inc, who operated it until the the late 1960's."
Rayonier bought Polson in 1948 and used the railroad until 1984.

There is a Polson Museum in Hoquiem, I wonder if they would have any information: http://polsonmuseum.org/

No, they don't. Is the loco a Baldwin? Is it likely to be ex-UP?

Here is a possibility:

UPRR 89 Baldwin 1708 Mar 1868

54-18x22 later 56-18x24

Built as UPRR 89 in 1868; to UPRy 89 in 1880; to UPRy 910 in 1885; vacated in 1896

This is the only UP Baldwin 4-6-0 I can find that would be available in 1897. They got rid of a lot of 4-6-0s in 1898.

You need to be careful, it is very common for the date(s) on the paperwork to be nowhere close to the date it actually happened.

And then there is the equipment that gets scrapped and later gets un-scrapped.
