Post subject: Question about Los Angeles PCCs
PostPosted: Thu Nov 07, 2002 4:49 pm

The city of Los Angeles had, I believe, standard sized PCCs that rode on 3 feet, 6 inch gauge track. PCCs are known for their ride quality and I have often wondered how such a narrow gauge affected the riding qualities and stability of the PCC. Does anybody know?

Thanks,

I would suggest you ask this question at one of the online groups devoted entirely to PCC's. There are at least two, along with at least one all-PCC website.

I have never heard any adverse comments. The ride of cars at OERM is nice. I believe that the body to bolster connection is the same for standard gauge and narrow gauge cars; one of the 1948 built cars made test runs on the only Long Beach line using trucks barrowed from San Francisco.

Also the maintenance in Los Angeles was top notch all the way up to the end.

Like Brian Norden I too have ridden the cars at the Orange empire Raileay Museum and don't recall anything different about them.

Just the other day I rode a PCC on the San Francisco MUNI F Line and those cars sure do ride nice. They are sure quieter than the Melan, Italy street cars with which they share the Heritage F line.
