Great wintery photo from the Cog Ry.

Winter has come early (as usual) on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire's White mountains. Though not nearly the tallest peak in the US, the highest wind speed ever recorded (on earth) was documented at around 230mph!

Check out this picture from the NeRail archive from just 10 days ago.

Great shot, its too bad they were only going 3/4's of the way up the mountain due to the weather, some years they would still be up top. The photographer only posted 10 or so shots of the trip, still hoping for more. The other minor tragedy of the season; mountwashington.org finally started a webcam with the cog tracks in view. Of course they started it about two days after the weather kept the train off the summit. Oh well, there should be some great random shots next year.

The Manatou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway has trips up Pikes Peak (now 14,115 feet above sea level according to the latest US Geologic Survey info)through December 31 this year. Their web page is
www.cograilway.com. I am going to try to schedule a trip up there next month my self.

This is off the subject of this thread, but your note on the Pike's Peak Cog Ry prompts me to ask if you know the real reason the Mt. Manitou Inclined Railway was dismantled several years ago. Lack of business? OSHA demands? Etc.? I thought they had good ridership since they drew on the crowds coming to check out the Pike's Peak Cog Ry. But maybe not.

For an account of what happened to the incline check out http://members.tripod.com/davren1/ Appearantly a flood and slide wiped out part of the line in 1990 and it was scrapped shortly after that.

That was sad that they destroyed the Mt. Manitou Incline. My mother and I used to ride it every time we went to the Springs. It had wonderful views and cost a fraction of the cog train next door, thus it was within our meager budget. Anyone know what happened to the cars, rail and winding machinery?

Many thanks, Roger, for the reference to the web page with info on the demise of the Manitou Ry. Yes, Bob, I agree that it's sad they destroyed it. It was one of my favorites for the same reasons, and because it was a fun ride that didn't require the time the cog railway does (although that's always been very high on my "admiration" list). Seems hard to believe that the flood damage couldn't have been repaired and the railway put back in operation. I had thought the Manitou Ry was owned by the cog railway people, so am surprised to learn that it was an out-of-state firm. Probably a case of total lack of interest and even a desire to put the operation out of business, with the flood damage being just the "excuse" they needed.
