Recently received David C. Schauer's book DULUTH, MISSABE & IRON RANGE RAILWAY IN COLOR and the author points out that DM&IR 0-10-2 #604 is preserved (in Greenville, PA) painted as DM&IR 604 on one side and painted as UNION RAILROAD #304 on the other. My question is this; are any other locomotives (steam, diesel, electric) or rolling stock so preserved? Thanks! midlandblb@cs.com |

My question is this; are any > other locomotives (steam, diesel, electric) > or rolling stock so preserved? While I have'nt seen it myself, I have read about and heard others mention a SAL caboose in the Durham, NC area that is painted as SAL on one side, and Durham & Southern on the other. At the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis we have our "Russian" decapod lettered Frisco #1621 on one side and Eagle Picher #1621 on the other. It was helpful that the same number was used by both owners. Museum of Transportation ron_goldfeder@stlouisco.com |

Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (ex-Pacific Electric) interurban car #1543, preserved at Travel Town in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, is painted in this fashion. Your post reminded me that Illinois Railway Museum operated the open platform Pullman observation Inglehome (Sp?) for a while, painted in pullman green and lettered for Pullman on one side while the other side remained in orange and blue (!!) and lettered as the Chief Illini for the donating Illini Railroad Club. In those early days at IRyM, it was very difficult to get around to the north side of the track to see equipment. Wonder if anyone at IRyM has a photo? Les midlandblb@cs.com |

One of the long-running jokes at IRM is the concept of the "one-sided car." This refers to the practice of cosmetically restoring one side and both ends of a car, since our barns only have public aisles on one side of each track. This has been done once or twice in the past, but recent cosmetic restorations have been done to the entire car and not just the side that will be seen by the public. Reading Birney 506 (Osgood Bradley 1920) is sectioned to show how a trolley goes together and also has one Reading paint scheme on one side and end, and another Reading paint scheme on the other side and end. Electric City Trolley Museum Association |
