I didn't see a thread that seemed quite appropriate to post this, but it's another positive development in steam. Best of all, it's not behind a paywall. Between UP 4014, ATSF 2926, N&W 611's planned visit to Strasburg, steady work on Reading 2100, and the developments with B&LE 643, I feel like a parched and starving man who has walked out of the desert and into Casablanca or some other city. http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/20 ... I chased this all three days since I live very close to New Haven. It was a very fun experience and from what I've been told, there were nearly no issues the entire move. This is what happens when you have an organization that is very well managed and has a clear vision and doesn't want to save every piece of equipment that's out there. I'm looking forward to seeing it run again! |

Conventional lubrication, just like running, would do the job. That would be shooting grease into rod bearings, and the mechanical lubricator (machine oil side) taking care of the crosshead and anything else, such as journal guides. One thing to keep in mind is that this locomotive has been run in relatively recent times, and has been under a cover at the museum since then. It isn't an engine that's been rusting in a park for 50 or 60 years--and we can thank Southern Railway and the Fort Wayne Historical Society for that!! |

They also made several service stops along the trip for the locomotive. One in New Haven, Lebanon Junction, Osborn Yard in Louisville, Frankfort, Midway, and the list goes on. Anytime the locomotive stopped for a short display period it was serviced to ensure everything ran smoothly. |

That's quite a classy shot! I do recall a drawing in a back issue of Trains, depicting both 2716 and 614 in steam alongside each other. Could that be in CSX's future? One would like to think so, but right now, I'll be happy with whatever transpires. |

Congrats to all involved in making this happen. Had interesting conversation with a person involved with this project. Had also been involved with some mainline excursions. He emphasised how their approach was more or less, "we are guests on your railroad what can we do to make this comfortable to your RR". He emphasized the "keeping the ego in check effect". He felt by knowing his audience and the other people involved knowing and remembering they were guests not co-owners of the RR made the trips go very smoothly. Have no idea if this "positive and cooperative attitude" was the deal maker or not? But he seemed to think it helped immensely to gain the respect and support of the people who could say yes or no to the objectives in question. What a concept? Be polite, cooperative and professional and be prepared to show your ducks are in a row. In this conversation it was not mentioned once about railfans opinions or support for these objectives having any consequence. So again congrats to all involved. Regards, John. |

Thanks, John for sharing that truly, positive information. Long ago, on one of America's biggest regional railroads I had the duty and sometimes pleasure to engineer pilot, steam excursions. Some used a large locomotive whose personnel felt they "owned" the railroad and could do anything they wanted. The others were smaller museum locomotives with volunteers who often would remind me that they were "guests" on our property and always proved it with their actions. Kindness, humbleness, and professionalism always pays larger rewards. exprail |

I think an issue with being able to move some pieces of equipment over the rails of companies such as CSX boils down to the organizations forgetting the purpose of the rail company. Their job is to move goods safely from one place to another. Trying to appeal to them solely saying something like “well this is a part of your heritage” doesn’t really help them make money. The 2716 move seemed very well coordinated and I’m sure any concerns CSX had were talked about in detail and they did everything they could to ensure that there would be minimal problems. You have to remember, new trucks had to be put under 2716’s tender to allow it to be towed, something that not all groups would want to do. Again, congratulations for the move and everyone involved! |
