Hyatt Hy-Roll bearings

Hi all,

Anyone know if Hyatt Hy-Roll bearings, has the grease fitting in the center, are a FRA no-no?

The Hyatt Hy-Roll bearings (AAR 2) are in included in rule 90 and are prohibited in interchange by AAR. They are also listed in appendix A of 49CFR215 and are restricted by FRA. They can not be moved without FRA waver and authority.

OP doesn't state use, but as info 49CFR215 only applies to freight cars. IDK the wording of Rule 90 regarding passenger applicability.

Thanks for the quick definitive answer.

As info, they were on a gon, in passenger service. How the lines blur.

They have been changed out.

I haven't had to pay attention to this for the last five years, but seems to me that AAR S-4045 covers lubrication of passenger car bearings for tourist roads and the like. Our cars had Hyatt oil bearings and rolled over several different roads out on lease. They were always inspected by a transporting railroad's car department and sometimes along with them came an FRA inspector prior to being picked up. Never had a problem. Of course, they never rolled over CSX or UP....

Dale, the line is not blurred in the eyes of the FRA. Their position, as emphasized at the ARM conference seminar held at Baltimore several years ago, is that if it was built as a freight car it is always a freight car. This includes cabooses.
