Think of this as something to apply to our "immersive experience."

Giving this some reflection, I think this gentleman's comment about modern building being about money and nothing but money is the key to understanding what we see.

In contrast, the structures from an earlier time were meant to be occupied, to be lived in, whether as your residence or your place of work. Who wants to look at bland and ugly all day long? That would have included business owners who were actually there to manage things.

Of course, the people who design and build and finance these ugly places do not live in them, they only sell them!!

Even the fancy high rises in London are "savings boxes in stone," not living spaces, in spite of being sold as apartments or condominiums. Certainly their owners don't spend too much time in them, they are too busy travelling to vacation spots and to where they can make deals.

One other detail--the "living" space in the older places wasn't limited to what was under roof or behind walls!! It included the streetscape as well.

James Howard Kunstler, who has been very critical of modern architecture and a lot of other things, has said that a streetscape is a "public room." If that is ugly, too, what does it say about us, about our neglect of part of the soul?

Arguably, the rise of automobiles and their overuse may be at least partially to blame. You wind up being more "involved," in that you're more aware of your environment (and the beauty it may have or lack) on foot or on a bicycle than in a motorized vehicle. If you aren't paying attention to the environment that way, if all it is is something to get through on the way to something else, you don't care about it.

What is currently considered disinteresting and ugly now, will be seen likely as something else when enough time has elapsed.
History has proven this to be truth.
