I am not sure where to start. At the Maine Forest & Logging Museum we have
two steam powered Lombard Log Haulers in the collection.

Our oldest machine dates from 1907 and is No. 38 and was originally purchased by the Eastern Manufacturing Company - Lombard assigned sequential numbers which were displayed on the smokebox door. This number was also the builder's number as opposed to standard locomotive practice which featured the number assigned by the purchasing railroad with the serial number or builders number stamped on the steam dome or elsewhere.

From what we can tell Lombard purchased his boilers from the Ames Iron Works which
stamped a serial number on the steam dome.

Anyway, during restoration the original lap-seam boiler was replaced with a new welded
boiler. However, the original boiler survives and is on display and we have the S/N assigned by Ames.

The other machine we believe was purchased much later (circa 1916-17) and last operated in the late 1940's. It features the original butt joint boiler. It last operated in 2009 and is in excellent operating condition and only needs a boiler inspection to operate. However, in keeping with the wishes of the family who graciously loaned the machine to us we do not operate it with the exception of moving it from time to time for cleaning, lubricating and preventive maintenance.

It would be neat to locate boiler records etc. from back in the day. But where is the best place to start? Our assumption is since Eastern Manufacturing was a large pulp manufacturer that they would have been inclined to obey the rules at the time. In fact one of the engineers that operated Lombards for Eastern Manufacturing ended his career as a inspector for Hartford.

You might contact the office of the state boiler (pressure vessel) inspector. They may have some records or other leads.

Many years ago I asked Hartford about old boiler records. They told me that when a boiler was no longer insured by them they disposed of the records. Did Maine have state inspection when these boilers were in service? If so try the state archives.
