Around 1880, Ephriam Shay developed the geared steam locomotive which bears his name. The oldest operating Shay locomotive still runs at the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia. Jason Stamper takes us along as he explores Cass, and rides behind a historic Shay.

Just so that folks here know, Lima #789, built for the Sierra Ry. in 1903 and later sold to Pickering Lbr. in the mid 20's, did operate for a few years at Castro Point Ry. in Richmond, CA in the 1980's, I believe.

She has been stored for some years in Niles Canyon by the PLA and has not been part of their steam program. Someday, perhaps.
