Attachment: 1tender announcement.JPG [ 335.33 KiB | Viewed 13263 times ] An important milestone has been reached in the 470 restoration. Details are noted in the attached PDF file. Millinocket Fabrication and Machining has been contracted to build the new tender body. A contract has been signed, and the contracted unit has been promised in approximately 12 weeks. Thank you for your determined support during the funding effort, over the past two years. We hope to have regular photo updates as they become available. |

hamster wrote: Will the new tank be riveted or welded? According to the second paragraph, welded on the inside for durability, but all of the exterior portion will be hot riveted. |

The Covid19 pandemic has Mainers taking precautions as recommended by medical officials. Part of this includes temporarily closing work sessions and visitation at the New England Steam Corp. shops, as well as our co-operative partners at Downeast Scenic Railroad. What hasn't stopped, although closed to outside visitors for the time being, is work on the 470's new tender tank. Millinocket Fabrication and Machine is continuing work, while protecting their employees. Here are three images of the tender as of March 18th. MFM President, Ed Girsa, tells us the major components are just about finished, although the corners of the tank are to be rolled next. From that point forward, it's a matter of assembly. We are very appreciative of this high standard of work ethic and customer satisfaction during this upheaval in our nation's scheduled plans. Maine Central 470's replacement tender will be delivered to the restoration site on May 22. The tender body has been fabricated by Millinocket Fabrication and Machine, of Millinocket, Maine. The tender body is welded around the seams but will be riveted in the traditional manner to reinforce the framework and maintain historic technology. Coal gates, doors, grab irons, steps and ladders from the original will be reused on this body. Two weeks ago Copia Specialty contractors of Bangor, sand blasted and primed the original 14 ton cast frame. The original tender trucks are being completed inside the shop at this time and assembly will continue through 2020, and possibly into 2021.

The new 470 tender has arrived and presently sits outdoors while preparations are made to bring it indoors for hot riveting. The original tender frame has been sandblasted, primed and painted as well, in anticipation of the reassembly, hopefully later this year.
