Post subject:  c. 1950 Railway Age Help

I'm looking to see when a particular ad by ALCo ran in Railway Age magazine. It may have been in one or multiple issues. I believe it ran in 1950 but 1951 is a possibility as well. Anyone have any back issues for this period that might be able to check?

The ad is a two page color spread of a Howard Fogg painting of two RS-3s delivered the Lackawanna entitled "Flexible Motive Power." It depicts and mentions their introduction to the DL&W lines north of Binghamton. Side note- I would love to find the original artwork- hopefully it still survives!

I emailed the current owners- their back issues are in storage and thus no help.

A local library might have them- but their website does not specify dates. I'm hoping to check that soon.

Thanks for any help with my quest!

Joshua

Keep an eye on eBay auctions. There are several sellers there who cut apart magazines and sell the individual ads for use as wall art.

Contact the RR Museum of PA Library. They have a complete run on Railway Age and likely can look up the info you requested.

Is this the picture at "Chenango Forks" with 906 leading?

There are a couple of prints searchable by that name currently on eBay that clearly show the artwork. I link to them now, but of course these links will not be good too far in the future.

There was also a book that contained much of his 'promotional' diesel art.

The book in question is "Howard Fogg and the Diesel Image," Weekend Chief, 1987. Not sure if I still have (or ever had) a copy, but it's common and inexpensive enough online, and I think that painting was in there.

The Md. Rail Heritage Library has a pretty danged complete set of Railway Age in its archives at the Baltimore Streetcar Museum, if you can get there on a Wednesday or make an appointment.
