Post subject:  Historic 98 year old New York Central boxcar saved!
New York Central boxcar #155524, long used for storage in Greencastle, Indiana has been donated by CSX to the Wabash Valley Railroad Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana. Built as a wood sheathed car in 1922, it was rebuilt later with steel sides and numbered NYC 155524. Eventually the car was placed in MofW service. Plans are to move the car to Terre Haute this coming week and the museum is requesting help with the estimated $15K cost for the move and for the cars restoration and display track. Contact them at wvrrm.org for further information.

I first ran across this car over 25 years ago when it was in company with two other retired steel boxcars. The other two cars were eventually scrapped long ago, but NYC 155524 continued to be used for storage by local track crews. My guess is that it didn't get sent out for scrap along with the other cars because of a missing coupler. Whether that is true or not, it's extremely good to see that the car will be preserved.

So did CSX know it was a historic piece and chose to offer it, or was it on somebody's "let's ask for this "list?

It's great it will be saved but i'm a little concerned about $15000 to move a empty boxcar forty miles. It ain't rocket science, I moved a caboose that far, and I helped a guy move two steel boxcars twenty miles and both moves were cheap enough that they were cash deals. And yes you need to argue with the moving companies and get multiple bids. It ain't a house and it ain't over weight or much over height.

Did a little digging out of boredom....

In case you didn’t know and for the benefit of others if curious, from the CASO website:
Built by ACF in St. Louis 1922. Wood sheathed auto boxcar, 10’ door 3’ off center. NYC lot 431-B. #275503 - #275750. Rebuilt at Despatch Shops 1939 with steel sides, centered 6’ door. Lot 572-B. #15572 - 156218.

That is the budget for moving and constructing/setting on a section of track. No budget for restoration yet and not mentioned in our release. I am not going to get into the details, but INDOT regs add to the cost.

Sorry 'bout that. I was going by the original post since my iPad didn't want to open the press release. Read it on my laptop just now.

Whew, INDOT must be awful proud of their high/wide permits. We can get a car moved from OH into PA for a lot less money.

Yep. This is over 14'6" too which adds to it.

When is this going to move?

Is moving boxcars during a historic pandemic really the smartest move? How many of those involved are going to be in the "danger zone" when it comes those who are most at risk?

As info: The Haley Tower Historical & Technical Society which owns the Wabash Valley Railroad Museum has also received the donation of a former NYC boxcar from CSX and is soliciting donations to move it from Greencastle, IN to its site in Terre Haute IN.

This is the same car that this thread is all about. FYI, the boxcar was delivered to Terre Haute yesterday, but because of some additional time needed in loading it at Greencastle, they did not have time to get it unloaded at the museum. Supposed to be done today.
