From a March 9, 2020 article in the Utica, NY Observer-Dispatch newspaper:

Around Feb. 17, the DL&W railroad depot of Washington Mills finally surrendered its body to its final resting place — a dump. It was killed in demolition after a long life serving the community in which it lived.

Born around 1868, the depot was one of the earliest and most fashionable ones with board and batten design, painted dark green with red trim.

I was expecting to see a dilapidated structure, not something that had been successfully reused and in good condition.

I was also surprised to read about its demolition. Back in the 1950s, the depot had been moved away from the tracks and it was preserved as a community center. The local NRHS chapter used to hold monthly meetings in it.

This is sad. There is a Lackawanna RR restoration project going on in Richfield Springs, just 25 miles away. It could have had a happy home there.
