Moving along nicely. Getting close to being done.

She sure does look good! I have a question (please excuse my stupidity). It looks like the pipe from the sand dome goes down to the second set of drivers. Wouldn't it have made more sense to have sand at the first set of drivers? Or am I missing something?

Oh my does she have the "sparkle". Just beautiful locomotive. Congrats to the many involved. If I had been part of that project I would be busting at the seams. Regards, John.

From one Schenectady fan to another... are the builders plates original, or reproductions?

From what I was told by a friend involved inn the project....one builders plate is original one is a replica.....but it's hard to tell which is which. That information was from the rocky club long ago when they owned the engine

Any info on the repro plate would be appreciated... I am aware of another Schenectady product whose operators would like to put plates on it (both originals long gone).

I was in touch with Wayne James a couple of weeks ago. He told me he is "just about retired." He said he sold all his builder's plate patterns to Barney Gramling.

Some determination and creativity resulted in a replacement builder's plate for Alaska Railroad 557. One of our group used a 3D printer to create a pattern for our long missing plate using photos from a sister locomotive in the U.K. for an example. Software was Freecad and it was printed in four pieces and then glued together due to the 9" diameter being too large to print in one piece on his FDM printer. It was cast in iron as was the original - cast during an annual demonstration of a small iron cupola by a local art group. One challenge was that software doesn't support putting pattern draft on the edges of the letters. The solution was to make an RTV mould and use the lost wax process for the casting. Total cost to the organization - $0.00.

Thanks for the kind words. I will admit that her paint job IS a replica. We were unable to save the original.

We have a friend who knows the family that has the other alleged original builders plate. We are hoping to acquire it some day. I have also seen that sister locos 22 and 25s builders plate have survived in privet hands. Another friend in CA has one of F&CC/NCO/SP 22s builder plates.

Oh and I have no problem continuing to post here. I have just been busy.

Great to know that both builders plates for RGS 20 still exist. Hope you guys can get the other one someday.

Many years ago, Hoosier Valley was offered the builders plates and number plate to our C&O Kanawha # 2789. At the time, the museum purchased the number plate but in those days, money was really scarce and the museum took a pass on buying the builders plates. There is always the hope that one day, they might turn up again.
