Does anyone have a photo of the Pullman Company's Mountain Mills before becoming Car # 60 on the Royal American Shows?

Does anyone have a photo of the Pullman Company's Mountain Mills before becoming Car # 60 on the Royal American Shows?

Well, the last reply blew away. In short, contact the California State Railroad Museum, archive section for photo 29264. It is usually preceded by a "P". Specs and a full set of drawings are available from the Pullman Library, Illinois Railway Museum. Check the website for that, and contact Bob Webber, curator. There may be more photos out there. Note that the photo covers a lot of 20 cars, of which 5 went to the Monon of which this car is one in the lot. So at least it gives a view of that type. If Pullman made air conditioning modifications, Bob might have a photo under that plan 2521-C or 2521-D. The original lot number is 4690 (1922). LOL Ted Anderson |

This order group of 20 Pullman cars all had two part names, The first word being MOUNTAIN. These cars entered service in June and July, 1923, and probably assigned to a specific train. The book Pullman Panorama by Wayner would probably note the specific train (my copy is still boxed up). By the time that Monon took ownership the cars were probably on a second or third train/route assignment. Of those 20, 18 are listed by Kratville as having assignments: 5 for the Monon (including the Mountain Mills) 4 for the PRR; Wayner lists that these 4 were for the Pan American 3 for the AT&SF 6 for the B&O; although it should be noted that a total of 6 is listed in the Plan index, but the actual breakdown of assignments for each name shows 7 for the B&O, and Mountain Springs is missing altogether And another clarifying note, the Mountain Mills wasn't actually sold to the Monon at the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture, rather it had been sold in January of that year to Royal American (the only car from this Lot that they acquired). Neither did Monon acquire any of the other 4 cars which had originally been assigned to them, but 2 of those still survive: Mountain City (rebuilt in 9/1937 to the Plan #4025H Carleton Club) at the Southern California R&LHS collection at the Pomona fairgrounds (surviving Pullman thread index/line item #5). Mountain View (rebuilt in 9/1937 to the Plan #4025H Kitchi Gammi Club) in PV service (#800705), one of only a very small number of heavyweight sleepers in regular "mainline" usage today (surviving Pullman thread index/line item #7) A third car from this Lot, Mountain Road (one of those assigned to the B&O) survives at the RY Museum of Greater Cincinnati (Latonia, KY) (surviving Pullman thread index/line item #50) Sources: 1.
