Post subject:  EMD Repro Builder's Plate Blanks
If anyone is interested in some blank EMD repro plates, please let me know. I'm working on having some made in Connecticut, they will be silk-screened with red, blue and black outdoor UV-resistant ink onto a 1/16" thick 304 stainless-steel blank, cut in the shape of the classic "hot dog" plates. Four mounting holes will be drilled in the original locations. Take the plate(s) to a local trophy and engraving shop and they can fill in the locomotive data as you may need.

The tentative price is about $115.00 each.

This image is missing the red line circle on the middle; that will be corrected on the final version.

If there are any EMD locomotive projects out there looking for builder's plates, this would be a good opportunity to obtain some blanks for your locomotive(s).

As with any type plates, make sure you rivet them to the engines, otherwise they'll grow legs and walk away.
I'm thinking of Doyle's plates on his PA in Portland. They're originals I think, but mounted with screws with special (though hardly tough to find) headed screws. I would assume anytime NKP 190 is out of the roundhouse, the plates get removed just in case...

I'm working on a project to have the more modern rectangular plates made. I have a dozen stainless blanks here that I had sheared to size, as well as the artwork ready to go. There is a special printer that can print directly to all surfaces that apparently is not affected by the weather, and I'm going to use that process. This is mainly for the SDP45's plates and some extras for fundraising purposes.

Roughly 15 years ago, a couple of gentlemen with a railroad background were offering vinyl decals of the "hotdog in a bun" EMD builder's plate with the data the buyer requested.

Look at pictures of DSRC 512, an SD7L (according to the bedsheet electrical diagram that came with it). The vinyl has proven to be colorfast and we sealed the edges with a clear product that was recommended. Fortunately, the holes remained to show where the original (and stolen) plates were located.

A separate source supplied the aluminum "SD7" plates.

I've got a stainless plate I bought about a decade ago (came off a scrapped Pennsy NW2 if I recall correctly, need to double check later at home) that avoided repainting. The blue paint is oxidized but largely intact, but the red was much less colorfast and has faded.

I wonder how many were subjected to well-intended but ill-advised application of sandpaper and steel wool after entering the curio/antique market.

If anyone is interested in obtaining one or more from this order, please PM me. Price is still $115 (we'd need many dozen to get even a 25% price break).

I'd like to close this out and get the order into production by first week of October.
