Baltimore & Ohio Number 1

Called The John Quincy Adams, this 1835 locomotive is the oldest original American B & O locomotive in existence. It is nicknamed "the grasshopper" because the up and down piston movement reminds people of the way a grasshopper moves. The wood burning engine was three times faster that the canal boats of the period, and marked the start of the decline of the canal era.
