Post subject: | Eastern Shore Railroad Question |
I am editing an article for the NRHS Bulletin on the Eastern Shore Railroad and I have a question about two of their EMD units. I have two fairly reliable sources giving me different information about ESR locomotives Nos. 2000 and 2001. One source says they are GP10s and the other says they are GP8Ms. Marre's book on Diesel Locomotives before 1972 does not list either unit. Can anyone shed any light on this? There are photographs of both units on the site below. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jeffrey Smith Bulletin editor Eastern Shore Railroad smith@drexel.edu |

GP8s were GP7s rebuilt by Conrail. GP10s were GP9s rebuilt by the Illinois Central at Paducah, KY. http://crcyc.railfan.net/locos/emd/gp8/gp8.html ryarger@rypn.org |

They all looked like different phases of Paducah Geeps to me. Paducah rebuilt GP-7's into GP8's, and GP-9's into GP10's. The system before everyone went crazy was GP-7u and GP-9u meaning upgraded. GP-7m and GP-9m were units that were not the full, normal as-built horsepower of those models. The MRS-1 looked like it was part of the historic collection there. schwartzsj@juno.com |

I'm using my memory vice any research source but I recall CR contracted out GP rebuilds to Paducah; GP-7's became GP-8's and GP-9's became GP-10's. Electric City Trolley Museum Association |
