Just a rundown of some not yet mentioned: Graham and Robert Claytor, Bill Purdie, Jensen, et al, for keeping steam alive in the South... Nelson Blount. Enough said. Ed Striegel of Baltimore, for NOT scrapping several B&O locos, but instead calling Larry Sagle and demanding they take back their 4500 and 5300........ and then later Reading 2100 and 2101 for the AFT......... Ross Rowland & Co., for inspiring another generation with 759, 2101, and 614...... A variety of old and new steam mechanics, including (but certainly not limited to) Steve Lee, Linn Moedinger, Dick Yager, Steve Wickersham, Doyle McCormack, etc. Also, a variety of "angels" without whom certain projects, from locos to entire RRs, would not have survived. In the international scene, special award to Dai Woodham of the scrapyard in Barry, South Wales that provided 200+ steamers to preservationists in Britain...... lner4472@bcpl.net |

Jim Bradley, of Stonington, Conn. Starting in 1962, on a postal clerk's small salary, Jim bought six heavyweight Pullmans from the New Haven, and at considerable expense, moved them to his property overlooking the NY-Boston Shoreline Route. Two parlors-converted-to-coaches, one sleeper, one full parlor, one parlor-obs, and one parlor-lounge. Jim was considered by his neighbors to be just another New England "character"-- harmless, but why save old railcars? His grandfather was bit "funny" that way, too-- he and two other guys got hold of an old broken down whaling ship in 1921, and wanted to create a museum for it. The "Charles W. Morgan" is now the centerpiece of a place called Mystic Seaport. Jim's Pullmans left the backyard in 1991, two years after his death. One to Valley Railroad, four to RMNE, and one to an RMNE member. hpincus@mindspring.com |
