Most legends of "steam locomotives hidden/buried in the woods/a warehouse/etc. turn out to be pure hokum, wishful thinking, or misidentification. My Notes from 1995 show that wood-fired steam was still being used to switch the intermodal container yard at Encarnación. They also state that steamer FCGU #230 was in Posadas, Argentina, just across the Paraná River, so apparently its been there for a number of years. For many years, the line from Posadas was the only rail interchange for the FCGU. It was fun to watch. By the way, in Encarnación there was also a wood-fired sawmill which used several steam-powered rail cranes. We asked and got a tour. They fired up a crane and moved it about for us. The tour of the bandsaw blade sharpening shop was interesting - the main sharpener was missing three fingers from the blades from over the years. Bart |

I was in Paraguay in 2007 to see the very end of the wood-burning steam switching at Encarnación. Here is a little video clip. There was also two out of use steam-powered car ferries that had been put out of use due to the construction of the bridge over the Paraná River to Posadas, Argentina.
