Something I have heard in discussions with five separate non-profits in the past three weeks, all unsolicited: "If/when we lose our [current] treasurer, we're doomed.........." Treasurers for non-profits such as churches, museums, etc. are doing a mostly thankless, albeit critical, job. Take a look around, and your group's treasurer is probably doing the books for the model RR club, his/her church, the "friends of the library," the animal shelter, the high school band boosters, etc. as well. Now, if you're only kicking around a thousand dollars, that's one thing. But some of these groups are handling a million or so dollars, or far more. And the biggest obstacle to finding replacements in the job seems to be the necessity for strict and wearying oversight--at least two signatures on checks, making sure no one absconds with or embezzles money, etc. via onerous oversight and review by the BOD. Some of this ties into the "checks" thread elsewhere. How do we bring the old model of "treasurer" to the 21st Century? |

If there’s only one person managing the money and finances of an organization that’s a major problem. It’s only a complex job if it’s set up that way. |
