Post subject:  Need color photos for railroad museum book
I'm writing an all-color book titled "Railroad Museums of North America". It will feature a history of railway preservation, along with a photo or two of about 150 North American museums. But first I need photos. Please send me a few of your best. They need to be jpeg or tiff files, at least 2000 pixels wide at 300 dpi. Captions would be helpful along with a photo credit and permission to reproduce. Because I can only use one or two, try to capture the essence of your museum. Send them to aaronmona@aol.com.

Further questions:

Is this a project of HeritageRail Alliance or of your own doing? To where do the proceeds go?
Is it going through a known publisher, railroad or otherwise, or another entity? Who is doing the page layout?
Will it be available for the pictured railroads to offer in their gift shops or online? What is the target price? Hardcover or softcover?
Will it be geared toward railroad enthusiasts or a general audience?

Please be aware that the museum near St Louis has changed its name to National Museum of Transportation a couple of years ago.

You could look at it as free advertising. It’s not likely to be on the New York Times best seller list so I wouldn’t think Aaron would be getting rich off of it. I know a couple authors of railroad related books. They’re happy to do a little better than break even. It’s a lot of work and not inexpensive, more like a labor of love.

Small run, labor of love books (which pretty much 100% covers anything railroad/railfan related) usually dont make money for the author. Its pretty well common to let photos be used in exchange for a copy of the work when it is done.

I will have more money sunk into reproduction's rights (from museums mind you) then I will ever regain with my book.

Something else to keep in mind - several of the museums listed are "corporate" museums, and they do NOT like when people write about them or publish photos without them being involved. A friend got a cease & desist letter over this from a FREE calendar he made..
